I had a notice of cancellation of a long -term client come across my desk. I thought something must be wrong. So, out of concern for them, I decided I would call to make sure they were okay. My client advised me they decided to try another carrier, not because of me or the agency, but because of the rates and his friend told him this other carrier was less expensive. They didn’t call me because they felt bad about leaving the agency. They informed me the premium for this new carrier was a few hundred dollars less. Of course, I asked,” Are you sure you have the same coverage and deductible?” They replied,” Yes, I told the agent the coverage we had, and they matched it. I told my client I would be happy to look over the new policy to compare it with the policy he had. They did not think it was necessary.
A few months later, I received a call. My former client had a claim. That is when they found out the policy and deductible were not the same! They did not get “the deal” they thought they were getting when switching.
So, to sum this up, if you have an issue with your policy and are thinking of shopping carriers, call your agent first!
