DNR vs R&R

If you are getting a roof replacement through an insurance claim, you're going to be receiving an estimate from the insurance company. Now, a term that is typically used during a roof replacement is R&R and DNR. DNR means detach and reset. That means that you'll be receiving the same, material that was previously on there. Typically, this applies to vents on a roof because there isn't enough significant damage to warrant a replacement. If there is a replacement, you're going to see something called R&R. That means remove and replace. Therefore, the contractor is going to take that off and replace it with a brand new, item.

Impact Resistant Shingles

What are high impact resistant shingles? Typically, these are known as IR4 shingles. They're built to withstand hail damage more than the average shingle. The way they do this is they test them using a process called a class for UL 2218 impact test. Essentially, they're going to drop a metal ball about the size of a golf ball 20ft in the air under these shingles. Now a normal shingle is going to break under that. However, these IR4 shingles withstand it. And that's how they pass the test.

Roof Age

The importance or lack of importance for roof age. Now, it's often common for people to, assume that the roof is in good condition because they received, word that their roof had a certain life span. However, that's not always going to be the case, especially depending on your environment, depending on whether heat, storms and other factors from the environment that can drastically impact the life span of your roof. On top of that, depending on the age of your roof, that may impact your availability for coverage under an insurance claim.

Solar Breeze Attic Fan

Why that's good for your shingles is this will allow a cooling process in your attic. So it doesn't get quite as hot when the shingles get baked from above and below. That can wear on them, and they end up becoming more brittle because they're taking heat from two sides. However, when you have a solar attic breeze that ensures your attic has proper air ventilation, those undersides of the shingles stay cooler. Therefore, they keep their integrity and can absorb impact better.

Licensed Roofing

This is why it's so important to make sure that your contractor is licensed when you're getting a roof replacement. Believe it or not, in the state of Texas is not required to have a license to put a roof on. However, there is a licensing program called AKA the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas. They provide testing and training to ensure that if you go through their licensing program, you're qualified to do the job. So remember, next time you're talking to a contractor about getting your roof replaced. Ask them, are you licensed? And ask for a website to reference it.

Types of Attic Ventilation

Here are some different types of ventilation for your roof that you should definitely consider looking into. one of the most common and effective is called Ridge. Then that's going to be a vent that goes along the very top peak of your roof. Those are great because they're at the highest point. Heat travels up. Therefore it's going to allow optimal cooling. The only thing better than that is a solar attic breeze. There's also your standard turtle events or box vents, which typically come out the sides of a roof to allow proper ventilation. Now, if you have a metal roof, you're not going to require as much ventilation as you would for a shingle, but it's still recommended.

Types of Roofing

There are various types of roofs you can get for your home. we'll start with the shingles. There's three tab, which is your basic stock shingles. There's architectural or composition, which is going to be your medium to higher tier shingles in terms of lifespan and durability. And there's impact. High impact shingles or air force shingles. Those are, built to withstand the heaviest of weathers for shingles. They typically have about the same strength as a metal roof. Metal is one of the most durable types of roofs. You also have, slate roofs and ceramic clay tile roofs, as well as wooden shingle roofs, as well.
